Caring for Marriage

The skies and seas were formed with waters above and waters below on the second day of creation, and now on the fifth day God filled the empty sea with fish and the vacant sky with birds. The second day involves learning about God, about your partner, about how to love—filling your mind with facts from what you see and hear (waters beneath), and truth that flows in through your conscience (waters above). Now on the fifth day that truth comes alive. Truths become values that touch and move you, and you start to care about them more deeply and want to share them with others, speaking of them with conviction. “In the fifth stage, we speak with conviction and, in the process, strengthen ourselves in truth and goodness. The things we then produce have life in them and are called the fish of the sea and the birds in the heavens” (Secrets of Heaven 11).

The seas on the second day—knowledge that has not yet come alive—are like the Dead Sea, which has so much salt that no fish live there. Yet the prophet Ezekiel saw a vision of the New Jerusalem with a river of pure water flowing from the threshold of the temple there, and as the water flowed down the hills of Judea into the Dead Sea they brought healing everywhere. “There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes” (Ezekiel 47:9), and fishermen will spread their nets all along its banks. This river pictures the truth from the Lord flowing from the spiritual mind down into the natural mind and bringing the knowledge there to life, and the fishermen picture the process of raising our minds above our worldly perspective.
